Coffee

Coffee was found by Ketut, our night guard, during his work in the rice fields. Ketut spotted Coffee struggling in a river, his condition so dire that it was clear he needed immediate help. Ketut contacted me right away, and we met at the rescue house to prepare for Coffee’s urgent transport to the clinic.

Once we got him safely into a cage—something we use solely for transport and medical reasons—we rushed him to the clinic. The initial examination revealed the severity of Coffee’s condition. His temperature was dangerously low, and he was severely dehydrated. He also had a necrotic infected wound in his mouth, eye discharge, and twitching, which initially raised concerns about distemper.

At the clinic, Coffee’s condition was closely monitored. His body temperature fluctuated, making it difficult to stabilize him. Tests revealed severe anemia, high white blood cell counts indicating systemic infection, and low platelets. Additionally, a PCR test confirmed the presence of a blood parasite, Anaplasma.

Despite our best efforts, including administering antibiotics, iron supplements, glucose, and IV fluids, Coffee’s condition remained critical. His PCV (packed cell volume) levels were dangerously low, and he required a blood transfusion—a procedure that could buy him time but not cure the underlying issues.

The vet team at the clinic worked tirelessly to save Coffee. They provided supportive care, cleaned his wounds, and tried to boost his immune system. However, despite these efforts, Coffee’s condition deteriorated. His breathing became unstable, and despite oxygen support and endotracheal tube insertion, his heart rate dropped, and he eventually passed away.
